Embedded Systems : an introduction

Embedded systems, unlike that of a general purpose computer (performing variety of task), is a scaled down computer system, contained on a single chip having both hardware and firmware, designed to perform operation to minimize human control.

DEFINITION:

an embedded system is special purpose computer system designed to perform one or a few dedicated function, often with real time computer constraints.

APPLICATION OF EMBEDDED SYSTEM:

Embedded system is also a control system
  • pen drives
  • hard disk
  • air conditioner
  • printer
  • mouse
  • fan
  • digital camera
  • automobile system
  • cell phone

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Types of embedded system:

NON REAL TIME EMBEDDED SYSTEM is one in which there is no deadline, thus high performance or fast response is preferred.
example:
  • security system
  • mobile and PDA
  • alarm system
  • digital camera

REAL TIME EMBEDDED SYSTEM : where deadline is to be met ie task is to performed within time limit.

  • sensor system in nuclear plant
  • missile defense system
  • flight control system
  • anti collision system in auto mobile.
